Fiji's Location

The Fiji Islands are a small island group situated midway between the South Pole and the Equator in the midst of the South Pacific Ocean. Fiji is on the airline route from the USA to Australia and New Zealand. Given recent incidents around the world, it is useful to know where Fiji is located. The Fiji Islands are isolated from the problems in the Middle East. Were not impacted by the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia and Thailand as they are over 4000 miles away in the opposite direction of motion of the waves.

Fiji's Geography & Climate


Fiji is a group of 322 islands covering an area of 1.3 million square kilometres of the South Pacific Ocean. Of these 322 islands, only one-third are inhabited, with the majority of its inhabitants residing on Viti Levu, Fiji's largest island.

Fiji has a pleasant year round climate without extremes of hot or cold. Land temperatures vary in the summer months (November - April) between 23 - 30 C (73 - 86 F) and in the winter months (May - October) between 20 - 26 C (68 - 79 F). Water temperatures are similary pleasant with a range of 27 - 29 C (80 - 84 F) in summer and 25 - 27 C (77 - 80 F) in winter.

People & Culture


Fiji was first settled some three and a half thousand years ago by seafearers and adventurers from Melanesia and Polynesia. European discoverers came across the island in the mid 1600's. Today, Fiji's population stands at approximately 800,000 with 52% Fijian (Christians) , 43% Indian (Hindu) and 5% other.

Fijian's are friendly, warm and loving people, regarded by many as the friendliest in the South Pacific. English is the common spoken language in addition to Fijian and Hindi.
